Bunch-of-emoji

When I started trolling Unicode

You might have already noticed that at Cheerz, we like to use the odd emoji in our communication 😁🍕🐱

Despite the ever-growing list of emojis out there, sometimes I struggle to find just the right one to express what I’m trying to say. And also I feel the extension of choice makes it worse, because if that emoji exists, then why should this emoji?

One quiet Friday afternoon I decided enough was enough, and it was time to email Unicode. The reason? I especially wanted a butterfly emoji, but there wasn’t one… yet there was a caterpillar. What was up with that?

Unicode, in case you didn’t know, is basically the company that makes sure that there is a character for every symbol. They’ve written a code that makes it possible for to use emojis in your emails, your Facebook messages and more.

On Unicode.org I couldn’t find an email address for emoji-specific queries, so I filled out the general contact form, never actually expecting a reply:

So when I actually got one from a guy called Rick, needless to say I was pretty amused!

I decided to push my luck a little bit more and ask Rick another question I was dying to know the answer to:

To which he replied:

Now that I’ve moved to Paris to be with the rest of the Cheerz team, I had a new mystery to solve, and sent Rick the following:

Hi Rick,

Happy Friday to you!

I was wondering why there is an emoji for the Tokyo Tower, but not one for the Eiffel Tower?

I would have thought the Eiffel Tower was much more famous/relevant than the Tokyo Tower… so I was wondering if there was a reason for this?

Also, having just moved to Paris myself, it would be absolutely brilliant if the Eiffel Tower could be added, as I would definitely use it frequently in messages. Is this a possibility?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I’m still waiting for a reply, but I’m hopeful that I’ll get one eventually.

So there you have it – there really is someone out there who’ll answer any and all of your (ridiculous) emoji questions!
